To have your computer run at optimum performance, you need to perform regular updates. These updates are crucial to the programs you have currently because they have patches, bug fixes, and features that are enhanced for a number of things such as more security. It doesn’t matter if you have a Windows computer or a Macintosh because both have normally scheduled updates by different manufacturers and these can be installed onto your system by the Software Update area.

Typically you will have the chance to set this up when you start your computer initially. These automatic updates can be performed in a variety of ways. You can choose to be notified when there is an update and then install it or you can choose to have the updates downloaded automatically as soon as they are available. Some updates allow you to choose which ones you want since some updates may not apply to you. Take for instance when you have a program like Audacity.  You may not need an update to edit certain audio file types if you never use those.  However, all of the security updates and important updates should be installed as soon as you get the notification if you are set up to be asked first.

Normally, these updates don’t take too long to install and won’t affect your ability to use your computer. However, some of the updates may take a little longer such as the Service Packs on Windows computers. Unlike a smaller file update like adding a new feature to an e-book manager like Calibre, these may take a little longer but are crucial to the system and its operations. In most cases you will have to restart your computer after the changes take effect but you will get a notification asking you if you’d like to restart now or postpone it. This can be helpful if you are right in the middle of something and need to wait.

The important thing is to always pay attention to updates when you get them and be sure to install all of the updates that are needed.
